HILLSBORO - Astoria advanced to the championship game of the Glencoe Baseball Tournament with a 7-1 victory over Century Tuesday afternoon at Hillsboro Stadium.
The Fishermen - the only 4A school in the eight-team tournament - will face either Glencoe or West Albany in the title game, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. today.
The field includes two 6A schools (Benson and Hood River Valley), five 5A schools (Century, Glencoe, Madison, West Albany, Willamette) and Astoria.
And "most of those schools will be 6A next year," said Astoria coach Dave Gasser, whose team improves to 3-1. "It's kind of nice that we're in the championship game. All of these teams have legitimate 5A/6A pitching, and they've all got athletes. It's a great experience for our kids to be in this."
In Tuesday's win, Astoria gave up a run in the first inning, then outscored the Jaguars 7-0 over the final six innings.
Max Johnson pitched six innings to pick up the win, with Jon Fick throwing the seventh.
The two pitchers limited Century to just two hits, while Johnson struck out eight and allowed one hit with no walks, but hit three batters.
Offensively for Astoria, Keifer Lucore had a double, Dane Lund added an RBI single, and Taylor Landwehr brought in a run with a sacrifice bunt.
Astoria scored its final run when Ian Erickson stole home in the top of the seventh.
Conor Harber will likely get the start in Wednesday's championship game, with Todd Cooper, Taylor Fox and Fick also seeing possible time on the mound.
