Astoria 4, Scappoose 0WARRENTON - There were no fans in the stands, but there were some shots in the net for the Astoria boys soccer team Monday as the Fishermen posted a much-needed 4-0 shutout over Scappoose on a blustery day at the Warrenton Soccer Complex.
Should the Fishermen and Gulls end up tying for the third time in Thursday's game, the two teams would go to a series of tie-breakers, with the third tie-breaker being: least number of goals conceded in district games, said Astoria coach Jerry Boisvert.
Astoria has given up four goals in district play, and Seaside has allowed five (the Fishermen and Gulls would be tied after the first two tie-breakers).
As for Astoria's game against the Indians, Jose Cruz scored three goals in the win, including two in the 80th minute.
Astoria opened the scoring in the 12th minute with Angelo Schauermann finishing off a corner kick from Phil Gaffney.
With two minutes left in the first half, Tony Alcantar passed to Cruz near the top of the box, and Cruz scored when a Scappoose defender and the Indians' goalkeeper both went down.
Playing into the wind in the second half, the Fishermen didn't score until the final minute, when Cruz found the net twice, his third goal of the night coming off a pass from Alcantar.
Astoria (6-0-2) will play Seaside (6-0-2) Thursday (time TBA), with the winner earning a state playoff spot. Both teams will still take part in the district playoffs.
Seaside 10, Rainier 0RAINIER - Nate Pogue scored four goals to lead Seaside to an easy 10-0 win at Rainier Monday evening.
Ben Dueber also had a pair of goals for the Gulls, who will go into Thursday night's game tied with Astoria in the North Division district standings. The season-high 10 goals gives the Gulls a 7-2-2 overall record.
In three games against the Columbians this year, Seaside has outscored Rainier 19-2.
