STAYTON - What slow start? Just a week after finishing the football season, the Astoria Fishermen won their second game in a row on the hardcourt Saturday night, 34-29 over Regis in a nonleague boys basketball game.
With five football players in the starting lineup, the Fishermen have shown a little rust to open the basketball season, but they still won back-to-back games Friday and Saturday to start 2-0.
"We'll take it," said Astoria coach Chris Hunt. "We didn't shoot well (in the win over Regis), but fortunately we played good enough defense and they didn't shoot well either."
The Fishermen were just 1-of-15 from the field in the first quarter, which ended in a 2-2 tie.
A flurry of baskets late in the second quarter helped Astoria build a 16-7 halftime lead, before the Rams closed to within 20-16 after three quarters. The Fishermen won the final period, 14-13.
For the second game in a row, Jake Hatcher led Astoria in scoring with 12 points, while Dane Lund added nine points and five steals.
Max Johnson finished with seven rebounds and three assists, and Garrett Puckett added six boards.
Astoria 49, Valley Catholic 43Astoria pulled away from Valley Catholic Friday night at the Brick House, to score a 49-43 win over the Valiants in a nonleague game.
The Fishermen held a 46-29 lead midway through the fourth quarter, before some late 3-pointers by Valley Catholic narrowed the final margin.
Jake Hatcher scored nine of his game-high 16 points in the first half to help Astoria build a 22-12 halftime advantage.
Hatcher scored back-to-back buckets to open the final period, as the Fishermen went on a 17-5 run.
Ian Erickson scored off a lob pass from Jacob Davis early in the fourth, and Davis had consecutive scores off the bench to cap a 6-0 run.
Erickson added a 3-pointer later in the period, as the senior scored all nine of his points in the final quarter.
Dane Lund finished with seven points for Astoria.
In other boys basketball action, North Marion defeated Seaside 62-39.
Naselle 70, Warrenton 51NASELLE, Wash. - Austin Burkhalter scored 22 points, Manny Lopez had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, and Marcos Herrera came off the bench to score 10 in Naselle's 70-51 win over Warrenton Saturday.
Reese Johnson, Billy Kerr and Cody Patterson all scored 10 points each for the Warriors, with Aaron Jannusch adding seven.
Life Christian 69, Jewell 46JEWELL - Jewell's Josh Stahley had 26 points and 11 rebounds, but Life Christian scored the win Friday night, 69-46.
Zach Rozinek had 10 points and seven assists for the Blue Jays.
Naselle 71, Ilwaco 59ILWACO, Wash. - Ilwaco's Justin Short popped in a 3-pointer to bring the Fishermen to within 59-57 of Naselle, but the Comets rolled in the next 12 points during the final 3:19 to spark a 71-59 nonleague win at Ilwaco Friday.
Naselle's Austin Burkhalter scored 20 points, and teammates Leo Mendoza and Marcos Herrera added 17 apiece for the Comets. Ilwaco's Karl Oman led all scorers with 30 points.
