VERNONIA — After trying their luck against a Class 4A team the week before, and losing to Seaside, 46-0, the Warrenton Warriors tried some 2A competition Friday, and scored a 40-7 win at Vernonia.

Warrenton’s Chris Brecht was the very definition of a workhorse for the Warriors, as the senior running back scored all five touchdowns, and also ran in two 2-point conversions, as Warrenton built a 32-7 halftime lead.

Brecht carried the ball 25 times for 229 yards (over nine yards per carry), with quarterback Brock Johnson gaining 96 yards on 14 attempts.

The Warriors jumped on the scoreboard first, on a 14-yard run by Brecht for an 8-0 lead.

Vernonia’s Tim Jennings ran 32 yards for a score later in the first quarter, but Warrenton took over in the second period.

Brecht had scoring runs of 1, 5 and 29 yards in the quarter to help the Warriors build their 25-point halftime lead.

After a scoreless third quarter, Brecht capped his big night with a 19-yard TD run in the fourth.

Brecht also had a team-high nine tackles, and intercepted a pass and returned it 25 yards.

The Warriors converted all five of their 2-point conversions, with Johnson passing to Nathan Bighill for the first conversion, and tossing another 2-pointer to Bradd Lundberg following the first score of the second quarter. Bighill ran in a 2-point conversion in the fourth quarter.

Warrenton’s defense held Vernonia to 148 yards rushing, while Logger quarterback Tim Jennings completed just 1-of-17 passes for 16 yards.

The Warriors play at Knappa Friday.
