MIDWAY, Utah — Former Seaside resident and Seaside High School graduate Ken Benfield of South Jordan, Utah, competed in his second “Spartan Beast” event in Midway, Utah, June 29, a 12-mile, 25-obstacle course race with more than 3,700 entrants.

Mountainous desert terrain, thin air and temperatures over 100 degrees did not deter Benfield. After placing second last year in his respective age bracket (in 3 hours, 22 minutes, 32 seconds), the 56-year-old Benfield improved his time this year by more than four minutes to place first in his age bracket this year in 3:18:08.

On Aug. 3, Clatsop County residents Patrick Morgan of Astoria (nephew of Benfield), Jamey Wilson from Astoria and Miles Pember of Warrenton will compete in a Spartan Sprint (five miles and 15-obstacles) in Washougal, Wash.
