REDMOND — In a three-team race for second place, the Seaside girls golf team finished third Tuesday afternoon, after final-round action in the OSAA 4A/3A/2A/1A state tournament at Eagle Crest Resort Course in Redmond.

Seaside’s third-place showing is the highest in school history since the Gulls placed second in 2001. Seaside also took third in 1999 and second in 1998.

Molalla cruised to the 2013 team championship with a two-day total 713, while Valley Catholic took second with a 772, followed by Seaside (782) and Taft (783). The Gulls and Tigers began the day tied for third.

Reedsport senior Monica Vaughn – who was one stroke behind Henley sophomore Kaitlin Collom after Monday’s first round – rallied to win medalist honors by a stroke, carding a two-day total of 140, edging Collum, who finished with a 141.

Seaside junior Katy Kawasoe was tied for 11th after one round, and that’s where she finished, tied with Janelle Ferlan of Molalla at 166.

While Kawasoe was four strokes off her first round pace (85, after an 81 in the first round). Seaside teammate Ashley Bassett dropped 10 strokes to a 94 (198 total, tied for 28th). Emma Hassan finished at 207, and Gabrielle Griffin carded a 211.
