SEASIDE — It’s shaping up to be a huge year for the Seaside Lady Gulls soccer team.

The Gulls played to a virtual standoff with two-time defending state champion Gladstone Tuesday night, as the two teams finished in a 1-1 tie at Broadway Field.

Seaside gave up an early goal (fourth minute) to Gladstone’s Kelsie Hathaway, but a long shot by Seaside’s Alli Utti in the 30th minute was just over the outstretched arms of the Gladiators’ keeper, and the Gulls had tied the contest at 1-1. The assist was given to Whitney Westerholm.

The Gulls buckled down defensively from there, as Gladstone pushed forward in hopes of a second goal.

“(Allison) Bussert had an excellent game in goal for us,” said Seaside coach Dave Rouse. “She was involved in some collisions, but played an extremely strong game. It was a solid performance.”

The Gulls also received a good game from Hannah Garhofer at a center-mid position.

Seaside continues nonleague action Thursday at Molalla.
