SEASIDE - The Seaside and Scappoose wrestling teams battled in a close one Wednesday night with the Gulls emerging with a 36-24 dual meet victory over the Indians.

"This match was electric," said Seaside coach Chuck Mattocks. "Only one pin in all of the matches wrestled, no major decisions or technical falls ... it was a close team score and also close in every individual match score. Winners and losers alike wrestled great matches for both teams."

Seaside's Jake Terrill gets the upper hand on North Marion's Travis Branum during a wrestling match earlier this season. Terrill defeated Kyle Stobbe 11-8 at 140 pounds Wednesday. The showcase match, Mattocks said, was Seaside's Josiah Sigler - ranked No. 2 in the state last year at 135 - versus Sam Marsh - No. 1 in the state last year at 145.

Marsh led Sigler 1-0 going into the final round of the 145-pound match before Sigler tied it with an escape, then won (3-1) with a takedown.

Elsewhere, Seaside's Steven Balzer and Justin Rogers avenged losses to wrestlers who beat them at the Pacific Rim tournament.

The Gulls' Jake Terrill defeated Kyle Stobbe 11-8 at 140 pounds - avenging a loss to Stobbe last year.

"These two teams were even on paper, and we feel really fortunate that we were able win so many close ones," Mattocks said.

Seaside travels to Toledo for a tournament Saturday.
