Boys have chance of finishing season top of six-team divisionWARRENTON - The Lower Columbia Youth Soccer Association Strikers are gearing up for the final weekend of the soccer season with a strong chance of winning their six-team division.

The team, which combines boys from Astoria and Seaside, plays in the U19 classic division of the Oregon Youth Soccer Association's winter league.

The Strikers finish the regular season with two games, Saturday in Hillsboro (11 a.m. at Hare Field) against the Hillsboro Thunder and noon Sunday against Tualatin Hills at the LCYSA soccer complex in Warrenton.

The league standings show the Strikers are top with a 7-1 record, having scored 43 goals and allowed six; their rivals, Rogue Valley Keltics, have an identical win-loss record, but have scored 33 goals and allowed 10. In head-to-head competition, the Strikers beat the Keltics 2-1 at home in the first game of the season then posted their only loss (1-0) on the road Feb. 26.

The Tualatin team has a 4-2-2 record and is in third place in the league going into the weekend's games. The Strikers beat Tualatin 6-1 on the road last month. Before visiting Warrenton, the Keltics travel to Tualatin Saturday, having beaten that team 6-0 earlier in the season. The Hillsboro Thunder's record is 2-4-2.

The Strikers' head coach is Dave Rouse of Cannon Beach.
