Angee Hunt is back for her second stint as head coach of the Astoria varsity volleyball team.

Astoria athletic director Howard Rub announced the hiring in a press release Tuesday, following the resignation of Eric Gohr earlier this month.

Hunt served as Astoria head volleyball coach from 2003 to ’07.

Gohr took over in 2008, and finished out his career with three straight top six finishes at the state tournament, including a school-record fourth-place showing last November.

“Eric’s done a great job of continuing the success of the program,” Hunt said. “The transition should be easier, since I’ve known most of the girls for years. That gives me a bit of a head start.”

After graduating from Thurston High School in Springfield, Hunt played four years at the University of Oregon (1991 to ’94), where she led the Ducks in kills as a senior, and is still ranked ninth in career total blocks.

Hunt was head coach at Cottage Grove in 1995 and 1996, and coached Seaside’s freshman volleyball team in 1997. She was a last-minute hire to coach Astoria’s junior varsity team in 2000.

For the past two seasons, Hunt has coached at Astoria Middle School, in addition to coaching various club teams.
