STEVENSON, Wash. - Get out the brooms. Ilwaco swept a Trico League doubleheader at Stevenson Saturday, winning the first game 11-4 and coming from behind to take the second 9-5.

Nick Leonard struck out 11 Bulldogs in the opener and didn't allow an earned run as the Fishermen banged out 13 hits in scoring 11 times.

In the nightcap Stevenson had fashioned a 5-2 lead when Rocky Mirelez opened the bottom of the fifth with a long triple to right center and later in the inning Bobby Crislip smashed a game-tying double over the right fielder's head.

Mirelez had a carbon-copy of his first triple to knock in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth and the Fishermen tacked on three more runs to take a 9-5 edge. Anthony Wirkkala allowed five hits and two walks in throwing a complete game victory.

Playing their fourth game in 36 hours after riding in a school bus almost 600 miles in that time was challenge enough for the young Fishermen.

The team learned earlier in the week that centerfielder and leading hitter, Alex Martin was lost for the season due to an emergency appendectomy operation. Coupled with six seniors being ineligible and another would-be starter also not making his grades, Ilwaco could have easily thrown in the towel.

"I couldn't be more proud of the way we competed, especially coming from behind in the second game," said Ilwaco coach Kevin Heimbigner. "We had four freshmen and six sophomores on the field today and it took every one of them to contribute in order to pull off the sweep."

Freshman Cody Chalker, seeing his first varsity action, played errorless ball at third and made three excellent tag plays.

Rockets defeat FishermenCASTLE ROCK, Wash. - Ilwaco was tied with Castle Rock 2-2 in the third inning of game one and trailed 4-2 going into the seventh inning of game two, but ended up on the losing end of both games there Friday in a Trico League twin bill.

The Rockets took advantage of four walks and two long triples in the home half of the third inning of the opener on their way to a 12-2 win. Three singles, an error, and a triple broke open the second game as the Rock won 9-2.

SOFTBALLStevenson sweeps IlwacoSTEVENSON, Wash. - The Lady Fishermen dropped a pair of Trico League softball games at Stevenson Saturday by the score of 14-5 and 18-8.

The Lady Fishermen scored three times in the top of the sixth of Game 1 on Ashley Kitzman's long triple, two infield errors, and Carley Taylor's single. Stevenson added six runs in the bottom of the inning to put the game out of reach.

Stevenson took advantage of 15 free passes and four Fishermen errors while only garnering three hits in plating their 18 runs in Game 2. Ilwaco is now 2-10 and 1-5 in the Trico.

Ilwaco splits with HockinsonHOCKINSON, Wash. - Ilwaco split a pair of Trico League softball games with Hockinson there Friday, dropping the first game 11-9 and winning the second 16-6 in a 5-inning contest shortened by the 10-run rule.

"We hadn't played in three weeks and it looked like it in our first game," Ilwaco coach Rick Bishop said. "We gave up 15 walks, wild-pitched seven runs home, made eight errors, and left the bases loaded in five innings and we only lost by two. It took a total team effort to not win."

The Lady Fishermen out-hit Hockinson 26-5 and Nicole Adams pitched for the first time all season, earning the win for Ilwaco in game two.

The senior struck out seven and gave up only two hits with five walks.

For the day, Adams was 5-for-9 and Ashley Kitzman was 5-for-7. Jesse Landeros had four hits.
