The Astoria-based Oregon Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has qualified a team of five participants to compete in the U.S. Open Championships in Santa Cruz, Calif., in October. The winners of the championship will travel to California, then on to Brazil for the Pan Am Games.

Nick Unander, owner of the studio seeks sponsors and donations for the upcoming trips. "These are local folks who have worked incredibly hard to qualify themselves for this," Unander said. "But they don't have access to the big name sponsorships found in the big city."

Participants are Peter Toyas, 16, of Seaside, Nate Adamson, 21 of Cannon Beach, Nik Gift, 20 of Cannon Beach, David Banuet, 27 of Ocean Park, Wash., and Nick Unander, 37 of Astoria.

A raffle and barbecue will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. Oct. 10 at the school, 252 Madison Ave.

Astoria Youth football gleans championshipsGASTON - The Astoria Youth football program is basking in the glow of two championships won last weekend.

The Astoria 3rd and 4th grade team knocked off Forest Grove 21-0 in the title game of a tournament at Gaston Saturday.

Astoria opened with a 28-6 win over Clatskanie, then defeated Yamhill 21-6.

Astoria's 5th and 6th grade team was also in Gaston, and defeated Banks in the championship game. It was the fourth straight year that Astoria's 5th-6th grade program has won the Gaston tournament.

The Astorians whipped Clatskanie 26-0 in their opener, followed by a 19-6 win over Yamhill.

On Sept. 20, Astoria's 7th and 8th grade team defeated St. Helens 28-6. The team was coming off a successful jamboree two days earlier, in which Astoria won all five scrimmage games.

The 7th and 8th grade team plays today (4 p.m.) against Warrenton at Astoria Middle School. The 3rd/4th and 5th/6th grade teams will be in action Saturday in a tournament at Clatskanie High School.

Tae Kwon Do classes heldThe Astoria Parks and Community Services Department will be offering Tae Kwon Do classes for juniors, 13 years and older, and adults, beginning Oct. 7 and running through Oct. 28. The classes are held at the Astoria Yacht Club Pacific Room, 1555 W. Marine Drive. The class teaches training in the Korean Martial Arts. The junior class is held from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Thursdays and the adult class is from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays. Cost of the session is $15. Preregistration is required.
