STEVENSON - "We haven't played in nearly a month (actually 27 days) and the long layoff hurt our timing at bat," Coach Rick Bishop said after his Lady Fishermen knocked off Stevenson 7-2 in the opening game of a Trico League double-dip. Ilwaco's bats went silent in the second contest as they lost a 2-1 nail-biter to the Lady Bulldogs to open league play for both squads.
"Sydney (Ward) pitched very well in both games," Bishop praised. "She threw a one-hitter in the first game and only allowed two hits in the second game. She struck out a total of 13 in the two games and walked nine with a strike zone that was apparently a bit high." Ashley Tapio had three hits in the twin bill, Kelsey Madsen added two and Alexa Wirkkala and Ward also hit safely for Ilwaco.
Bishop said Tapio in centerfield and Aimee Banuet at second base both triggered double plays and Wirkkala's relay throws from shortstop nailed three runners at the plate. Ilwaco is now 1-1 in the Trico and 3-2 on the year.
