Baseball tryouts setTryouts for Lewis & Clark Cal Ripken Baseball will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Astoria Middle School gym.

Children eligible for Lewis & Clark Cal Ripken must reside south of Young's Bay (Young's River, Lewis & Clark, Jeffers Garden, Fort Clatsop, Alternate Highway 101 areas) and/or east of the Astoria city limits (Highway 202, Walluski, River Point, Olney).

If your child played previously for Lewis & Clark Cal Ripken, but you have moved out of the Lewis & Clark Cal Ripken boundaries, your child is still eligible to play in the Lewis & Clark program.

Parents note: If your place of residency is in the Astoria city limits, your child will sign up and play for the Astoria Cal Ripken organization.

Children eligible for Cal Ripken Baseball are ages 8 to 12, regardless of grade in school. Your child must turn 8-years old prior to May 1, and must not turn 13 prior to May 1.

Registration fee is $40 per child or $50 per family. Fees will be due Feb. 22 during registration from 3 to 4 p.m. A copy of your child's birth certificate is required if this is the first year he or she is participating in the Lewis & Clark baseball program.

Astoria baseball camp scheduledA camp and clinic is scheduled for Feb. 28 for Astoria Youth Baseball.

The one-day camp, from 1 to 4 p.m., will take place at the Aiken Field batting cage facility and Astoria High School.

Included will be basic baserunning skills and reactions (30 minutes); basic skills of throwing and catching (30 minutes); fielding ground balls and infield play (30 minutes); outfield play (30 minutes); and basic hitting skills (one hour).

Cost is $40 for the camp.

A coaches clinic will follow the camp at 4:30 p.m. at Fultano's Pizza. DVDs of teaching fundamentals and drills will be available for purchase for $20.

Send registration forms to David Gasser, 249 W. Exchange St., or sign up 15 minutes prior to 1 p.m. the day of the camp.

Shrine Game selectionsThe North Coast will be well-represented in this year's East-West Shrine All-Star football game in Baker City. Astoria and Knappa will send two players each to take part in the annual event.

The game is scheduled for Aug. 1 at Bulldog Memorial Stadium in Baker City, where the state's top seniors from the 2008 season will gather for one last contest at the prep level.

Astoria quarterback Jordan Poyer will lead the West team before he joins Oregon State, while Fishermen teammate Trevor Puckett will also compete for the West.

Knappa's John Benthin and Doug Montgomery will both suit up for the West. No Warrenton players were among the 3A selections.

Knappa's Aaron Thornton will be one of four coaches for the West squad, along with Rick Taylor (North Bend), Kyle Fessler (Regis) and Jim Johnson (Triad).
