The Astoria boys basketball team held a two-point lead at halftime against the state’s third-ranked team Tuesday night at the Brick House.
But Valley Catholic responded by outscoring the Fishermen 17-6 in the third quarter and posting a 58-51 win in a Cowapa League opener.
“We competed, and I was really happy with the way we played,” said Astoria coach Kevin Goin. “It was good to see us making improvements. We put up some points and had three players in double figures. But we had a hard time stopping their big guy (6-foot-6 Ben Robbins), and Valley Catholic did a nice job making their free throws in the fourth quarter (11-for-12).”
Robbins led all scorers with 22 points, while Karsten Johnson scored 14 points to lead the Fishermen. Astoria teammates Josh Olson and Ian Hunt added 13 points apiece.
