The Warrenton Warriors are quickly closing in on the top spot in 3A football, as the state’s best was on display again Friday night at John Mattila Field.

Senior quarterback Hordie Bodden Bodden accounted for 34 points (three touchdown runs, two TD passes and a pair of 2-point conversion passes), helping the Warriors to a 48-36 win over Sutherlin.

Warrenton rises to the No. 2 ranking in the latest Oregon School Activities Association ratings.

Friday’s game turned out to be closer than it started, as the Warriors built a 22-6 halftime lead, but failed on four two-point conversions in the second half to keep Sutherlin within striking distance.

Warrenton’s defense made up for it with a 90-yard interception return by Dawson Little in the second quarter.

The Warriors (3-1 overall) are scheduled to host Clatskanie (0-4) later this week, with the Tigers coming off a 41-0 loss Friday at Knappa.
