HILLSBORO — McMinnville pitcher Nathan Leid tossed five innings of shutout ball, struck out five and allowed just one hit and one walk to lead the Grizzlies to a 7-1 win over Astoria Tuesday morning, in a consolation round game of the Glencoe Spring Break Tournament at Hillsboro Stadium.
Astoria finishes the tournament Wednesday.
Leid and Sam Swenson combined for three hits and three RBI’s for McMinnville, a Class 6A team which was 24-6 last year.
The Grizzlies broke open a close game with five runs in the fifth inning.
Olaf Englund had two of Astoria’s three hits. Fishermen starter Jackson Arnsdorf scattered four hits, with four strikeouts and one walk over four innings, but took the loss.
Samboy Tuimato had an RBI single in the sixth inning for Astoria’s lone run.
Astoria coach Dave Gasser missed the game, after being injured in a head-on collision following Monday’s game.
The accident took place near the Highway 26-Cornelius Road overpass, near Liberty High School.
Assistant coach Brian Babbitt said Gasser is recovering and will return next week.
The Fishermen are scheduled to play Forest Grove in a consolation final Wednesday morning.
