Three local runners, Wendy Montgomery, Dan Heiner and Nancy Frederick, braved the wind and rain to run in Portland's 39th annual 26.2 mile marathon Oct. 10. Highlights included crossing the St. John's Bridge at mile 17, consuming mass quantities of gummi bears and sports goo, sharing the course with 14,000 other competitors, and enjoying the 74 bands stationed along the route.

"The thrill of running with 14,000 other competitors and knowing I would not be last made the pain of the following two weeks worth it!" said Montgomery.

"I ran the first 3 miles wearing a garbage bag to keep warm," laughed Nancy, "but other than that, the race was fantastic and I would definitely do it again!"

Heiner, having completed the race many times before, eagerly awaits next year's race, which will be the 40th anniversary of the Portland Marathon.
