Amy Emmett has been named the new varsity swim coach at Astoria High School, athletic director Howard Rub announced Tuesday.

Emmett takes over for Tim Roth, who had replaced longtime coaches Carla Oja and Paul Gascoigne after the 2010-11 season.

Emmett is the current coach of the North Coast Swim Club, and coached the Newport High swim team from 2002 to February of 2011.

She was the Valco League’s boys swim Coach of the Year in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007.

“We are very excited to be able to add coach Emmett to the AHS coaching staff,” Rub said. “Her experience and passion for swimming are second to none. She’s an outstanding teacher of the sport and she will work extremely well with our current group of student-athletes.”

Emmett has previous coaching experience at Crescent Valley High School (1995 to 2001) and Seaside, where she was an assistant coach/volunteer from 1990 to 1995.

She swam competitively at Oregon City High School and Lewis & Clark College.
