For the second time this season, the Seaside boys golf team followed a strong showing in a tournament with a disappointing outing in league play.

Two days after placing ahead of all the Cowapa League teams at the Seaside Invitational, the Seagulls returned to Gearhart Golf Links and were beaten by the Astoria Fishermen, 335-369. Earlier in the season, the Gulls followed a first place finish at the Astoria Invitational, which also included all the Cowapa League teams, with a loss to Tillamook the next day. The loss puts Seaside’s record at 1-2 in league play.

The top three scores all belonged to Astoria players as Chris Olson’s 86 was the only Seaside score to beat any of the Fishermen’s counting scores. Astoria’s Alex Ferber was medalist for the day with a 79. Devan Flukinger was the next lowest Seagull player with an 89. Evan Jiroudek shot 89, Matt Peinhardt carded an even 100 while Peter Scruggs shot 103.

"Astoria shot well and deserved the win," said SHS golf coach Jim Poetsch.

"I thought we had turned the corner on Tuesday, but today we ran into a wall. All of the players had some good holes, but Chris Olson was the only one to avoid having worse than a double-bogie.

“Evan played well most of the day, but had a three-hole stretch where he was eight over par. Devan was eight over on two holes and both Matt and Peter were nine over on two holes.

“Without those blowup holes, the kids could have posted some decent numbers. We have one week to get our games together and see what happens at districts. Hopefully, we are just a team that performs better in a tournament setting."

The Seaside JV team scored a 430-453 victory against the Astoria squad. Freshman Lujac Desatel picked up his first ever medalist honors with a score of 98. Stuart Graffius and Josh Van Horn had the next best scores in the match with a pair of 106’s. Gavin Brown shot 120 for the Gulls while Zaquarie Mendenhall shot a 142.

The SHS Boy's team hosted the Banks Braves at Gearhart Golf Links on Tuesday, May 2 in the final Cowapa League match of the year. Results will be posted next week.
