Sherwood 4, Seaside 1SHERWOOD - The Seaside girls soccer team finally met their match over the weekend.

And it turned out to be the same match that knocked the Gulls out of the playoffs last year.

For the second year in a row, Sherwood ended Seaside's season, this time by a 4-1 count in a state quarterfinal game Saturday in Sherwood.

The Gulls were much more competitive this year as the score was tied 1-1 after 50 minutes of play.

Following a crossing shot from Mel Owens 10 minutes into the second half, Seaside's Jackie Bermingham was there to clean up, scoring at the left post.

Sherwood took a 2-1 advantage on a goal by Mauri Fabio in the 60th minute, and the Lady Bowmen added a penalty kick nine minutes later to pull away.

With state playoffs wins over Brooking-Harbor and La Grande this year, the Gulls finish 10-6-1 overall.

Phoenix 2, Central 0Phoenix senior forward Jaime Escobedo scored two goals to help the Pirates post a 2-0 win over District 1 champion Central in a Class 3A boys soccer state playoff Saturday.

Phoenix advances to play at Gladstone Tuesday in the semifinals.
