JOHN DAY - The Seaside baseball team finished the Les Schwab Classic on a positive note Saturday, scoring a 7-3 win over Sutherlin in the annual tournament at John Day.
The Gulls went 2-2 over three days, with victories over La Pine and Sutherlin and losses to Grant Union and South Albany Friday.
In Saturday's contest, the Gulls led 6-2 after three innings.
Joel Slovak got the start and the victory for Seaside, while Ben DeGandi and Nick Nelson finished on the mound. Ian Dueber, Jason Spear and sophomore Eddie Soller all had two hits apiece for the Gulls.
In Friday's action, Nelson, Ryan Sparks and Erik Knutsen were all 2-for-3 in a 15-5 loss to Grant Union.
Sparks went 2-for-3 in a 10-1 loss to South Albany.
Seaside 12, La Pine 9JOHN DAY - The Gulls opened the Les Schwab Classic Thursday with a 12-9 win over La Pine.
Seaside built a 12-2 lead after four innings, then held off a rally by the Hawks, who scored six runs in the sixth inning.
Nick Nelson pitched a solid five innings for Seaside, while Ryan Sparks (4-for-4) led the offensive attack with a double and a triple.
Nelson and Jon Perry also had two hits apiece.
North Beach 8, Naselle 0OCEAN SHORES, Wash. - North Beach blanked Naselle 8-0 in a Pacific 2B League baseball game Saturday. The Comets had just four hits - three from Chase Chapman and another by Logan Scrabeck.
Pitcher John Hines allowed two unearned runs through the first four frames on four hits with six strikeouts.
The Hyaks broke the game open in the final two frames by scoring six unanswered runs while taking advantage of four walks and a hit batter.
The Comets managed to load the bases in the fourth, but a pair of strikeouts ended their best threat. They again loaded the sacks in the sixth, but a ground out ended that rally.
Defensively, left fielder Alan Erickson pegged out a runner at the plate and Chris Walkowiak continues to play well at third base. Naselle is now 1-3 for the year and 0-2 in league play.
