SEASIDE — The Seaside Board voted to approve six middle school coaches Tuesday.

The six coaches are: Cory Blecha and William Westerholm, head football coaches, seventh and eighth grade; Brian Habecker, head volleyball coach, seventh grade; Kelli Truax-Taylor, head volleyball coach, eighth grade; and Angela Bice and Jennifer Gooch, cross country coaches, sixth, seventh and eighth grade.

All six coaching positions were funded, including coaches’ travel, through private donations and fundraising efforts.

The school district cut funding for middle school sports earlier this year after districtwide budget cuts of $1.55 million and has since relied on private fundraising efforts to retain the programs.

All fall middle school sports are funded; all winter and spring sports' funding must be in place two weeks before the season's start.

Blecha, Westerholm, Habecker, Bice and Gooch were approved unanimously, while Truax-Taylor had one abstention, her husband, Brian Taylor, because of a conflict of interest.
