JEWELL Just three seniors are returning to the Jewell varsity volleyball team, but despite their youth, the Jays look forward to a strong leadership of a new head coach, Jessica Miller.
My goal is for everyone to have faith in one another and trust one another and the team, said Miller who coached the junior high girls last year.
She has three seniors with experience to work with: Alexa Armstrong, Claire Reams and Darby Littlepage.
I think this season we will have a very successful team, said the sole junior on the team, Rachel Stahly. We are all really good players and I think we will go far. We are especially good at setting and hitting, she said.
We have very strong servers and well be strong on defense as well, the coach said. Our weakness is our lack of height and because of that well have to change our strategy a bit.
Whether the Jays can make it to the districts or beyond depends partly on their tenacity at the net, but also on whether they can keep free of injuries. With such a small team, the Jays cannot afford to lose anyone to a sprained ankle or pulled ligament.
We havent and any injuries yet cross our fingers! said Miller.
Stahly thinks the team has the skills necessary to go beyond the regular season. Personally, I would like to make it to districts and get lots of kills, she said.
The Jays first game is a tournament Saturday at Neah-Kah-Nie.
