Banks 2, Astoria 1The Astoria softball team played one of its best games of the year Friday, as they hosted Banks for a scheduled doubleheader at Niemi Field.

Game 1 turned into a pitcher's duel between Annie Schlegel of Banks and Astoria's Mari Ramarui, with Schlegel winning the battle, 2-1.

The Braves scored twice in the top of the first and Astoria scored its lone run in the bottom of the first, with a scoreless six innings to follow.

Both teams had seven hits, with Schlegel striking out nine with no walks. Kelly Roman had two hits for the Fishermen.

The second game was tied 4-4 through nine innings when the contest was suspended because of darkness.

In her first game of the season, Astoria's Alex Hillard pitched the entire nine innings, allowing just three hits with eight strikeouts and eight walks.

Hillard suffered a knee injury midway through basketball season.

Rainier sweeps GullsRAINIER - Rainier had a combined 28 hits on the day in a 9-5, 12-2 doubleheader sweep over Seaside Friday.

Rachel White went 3-for-4 with two doubles in Game 1, then added a double and a triple in Game 2.

Teammate RaeAnne Hanks was also 3-for-4 with one double in both games.

Rainier pitcher Megan Stoddard picked up the complete-game victory in the opener, while Hanks tossed a complete game in the Game 2.

Abby Frank had a pair of hits in both games for Seaside, including a triple in Game 2. Jackie Bermingham had two hits and two RBI's in Game 1.

The Gulls close out the season vs. Scappoose at home Tuesday, which will be Senior Day for the Gulls as well as the final game for head coach Tom Mauldin, who is retiring at the end of the season.

Vernonia sweepsVERNONIA - Vernonia's Joreigh Landers pitched a no-hitter in Game 1, and picked up another win in Game 2 in Vernonia's 6-0, 5-3 sweep over Warrenton Friday.

Landers also had a home run in the opener.

The Warriors had six hits in the second game, including two each from Ashley Poole and Katie Wolfe. Pam Wilkins added a double.

Warrenton finishes fourth in the league standings, and will play Corbett Thursday in a district playoff game, site to be determined. The winner of today's Clatskanie vs. Vernonia game will be the league champion, the loser will host the district playoffs Thursday and Saturday.
