VERNONIA - Warrenton's quest for a state playoff spot began Monday night with a 51-48 victory at Vernonia, in a loser-out Lewis & Clark League boys basketball playoff.

Now it's on to Clatskanie Wednesday, with the winner of that game to play Oregon Episcopal Thursday for the L&C's final berth to the state playoffs.

"We're just fightin' the fight and taking it one game at a time," said Warrenton coach Josh Jannusch.

Reese Johnson scored 15 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Warriors in Monday's win, while Cody Patterson added nine points, and Billy Kerr finished with seven points and six rebounds. Nathan Ferrell chipped in six points and five boards.

Warrenton had to overcome a 16-10 deficit after one quarter, then held off the Loggers in the fourth period by making 9-of-14 free throws.

"The second half we handled their pressure a little better, and we picked up the defensive intensity and had a pretty good third quarter," Jannusch said. "In the fourth quarter we were able to run our offense and get some looks, and we did a good job at the line."
